Shaun Norris continued his good season on the DP World Tour with a share of ninth place on Sunday in the Amgen Irish Open at the K Club with his closing two-under-par 70 taking him to a 732-hole aggregate of 10-under-par.

In a dramatic final round, during which Rory McIlroy won his national open when he won on the third extra hole after making a 30-footer for eagle on the last hole of regulation play, Norris made four birdies and two bogeys, and was projected to rise four places to 16th on the Race to Dubai rankings.

McIlroy beat Joakim Lagergren of Sweden, who emerged from a five-way tie for the lead on Sunday’s back nine with a superb round of 66 and looked to have struck the decisive blow with a magnificent 266-yard approach to five feet to set up an eagle at the 16th.

McIlroy, though, responded with his putt to eagle the last and extend the tournament to a 73rd hole, where both players went close to eagles before tidying up for matching birdies.

McIlroy’s approach next time round only just cleared the water but it was the same result. At the third time of asking Lagergren found the water hazard, allowing McIlroy to win it with two putts and emulate his 2016 victory at the same venue.

He said: “I just feel so lucky that I get to do this in front of these people, the support has been amazing all week. So happy I could play the way I did this week and get the win.”

Behind Norris, Richard Sterne carded a closing three-under 69 to finish in a share of 15th on seven-under, while Casey Jarvis went a long way to retaining his card towards the end of a tough season with his closing one-over 73 giving him a share of 20th. That projected him to 90th on the Race to Dubai rankings.
