Louis Oosthuizen fired a two-under-par 70 on Saturday to climb 27 places on the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open leaderboard into a share of 27th place on three-under-par, seven back of the lead.

The lead is shared at 10-under by Carlos Ortiz of Mexico and, controversially again, Patrick Reed of the United States. Reed took relief for an embedded ball off the fairway without it being clear that he was entitled to it, and without even consulting his playing partners.

Oosthuizen started his round on the 10th, and soon was in trouble with a bogey on the 12th. But birdies on 16 and 18 got him into red figures and two more on six and eight – punctuated by a bogey on seven – saw him get himself into the upper reaches of the leaderboard.

Behind him, Dylan Frittelli carded a one-under 71 to move to two-under for the tournament in a share of 33rd. Charl Schwartzel was one-over in his third round, slipping to one-under for the tournament in a share of 39th. South African turned Slovak Rory Sabbatini signed for a level-par 72 in the third round, but remained inside the top 20 in a share of 17th.
