Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel didn’t have the best of rounds on Friday in the foursomes of the Zurich Classic on the PGA Tour, but their combined one-under 71 was still good enough to have them in a share of fifth.
At 10-under for the tournament, and a round of fourball play ahead of them on Saturday, they will feel confident that they can made inroads into the lead held by Cameron Champ and Tony Finau of the United States and the Norwegian duo of Viktor Hovland and Kris Ventura.
Olympic medallists Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose are in third together with Bubba Watson and Scottie Scheffler, who are two shots behind the leaders’ 13-under.
Oosthuizen and Schwartzel started their round on the 10th, and bogeyed the 14th and 15th, before picking up their first birdie on the 18th. They picked up two more strokes on the second and the seventh.
Erik van Rooyen and his partner American Wyndham Clark were two-over 74 in their fourball round to drop into a share of 24th, while Dylan Frittelli and Kevin Streelman missed the cut by one after also carding a to-over 74 in the second round. Branden Grace and Harold Varner III signed for a one-over 73 in the second round to also miss the cut.
Elsewhere, both Tyrone van Aswegen and Dawie van der Walt missed the cut in the Korn Ferry Tour’s Veritex Bank Championship in Arlington, Texas.
And in Japan, Scott Vincent of Zimbabwe is in a share of ninth on nine-under in the Kansai Open Golf Championship, three shots back of the three-way tie for the lead which is held by Chan Kim, Rikuya Hoshino and Kunihiro Kamii. Shaun Norris missed the cut.
