Louis Oosthuizen matched winner’s closing two birdies on the final two holes on Sunday, but it was only enough to give him a share of second in LIV Golf Jedda at Royal Greens Golf & Country Club in King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia.
Oosthuizen carded a three under-par 67 with three more birdies and two bogeys on his card, and, at 14-under for the 54-hole event, he was three strokes behind arguably the hottest player in the world right now, Joaquin Niemann of Chile. Niemann also had five birdies, but just one bogey, in his closing 66.
Joining Oosthuizen in a share of second behind Niemann was Charl Schwartzel, who remained in contention throughout the three rounds. He closed with a two-under-par 68 with three birdies and a bogey.
The South African pair was one shot clear of Bryson DeChambeau in third with Jon Rahm fifth a further shot back on 11-under-par.
Dean Burmester closed with a one-under 69 to finish in a share of 15th on seven-under together with Branden Grace, who closed with a one-over 71.
The South African Stinger GC team finished in second place on 34-under, four shots behind DeChambeau’s team, Crushers GC.
“We played well,” said Oosthuizen, who captains the team. “Team did well, second. Our first top three for the season. Hopefully we can build on this and get a win somewhere. All four of us are playing pretty good.”
