Aldrich Potgieter might have made three bogeys on Friday, but he was still able to piece together a five-under-par 66 to climb into a share of 13th in the PG Tour’s John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.
South Africa’s youngest-ever winner on the PGA Tour after his victory last week, started his round on the 10th, and overcame bogeys on 12, 18 and his closing hole, the ninth. He did that with three birdies on his front nine and five on his back nine as he moved to nine-under-par for the tournament.
In the lead through 36 holes – for the first time in his PGA Tour career – was American Doug Ghim, who holed out from the fairway for eagle for the second straight day, sending him to a three-under 68 and a one-shot lead at 12-under over five players, including a former Nedbank Golf Challenge champion Max Homa, and a former Alfred Dunhill Championship winner, David Lipsky.
Potgieter’s bogeys came when he failed to get up and down from greenside bunkers on four and nine, and when he three-putted from 30 feet on the 18th.
Thriston Lawrence added a three-under 68 to his opening 66 to move to eight-under and a share of 16th, while Garrick Higgo’s one-under 70 took him to five-under and a share of 43rd.
Former champion Dylan Frittelli missed the cut, as did Christiaan Bezuidenhout. They were on two-under and one-under respectively.
