There another surprise exit from a tournament on Saturday on the PGA Tour: 20-year-old rising star Aldrich Potgieter, who captured his first PGA Tour victory last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, has withdrawn following the third round of the John Deere Classic.
Potgieter entered Saturday in contention, but after a disappointing five-over round dropped him to four-under for the tournament, he made the decision to withdraw, despite still being in the running for a sizable payday.
Fans weren’t particularly pleased with the withdrawal, pointing to his poor third-round performance as the likely reason behind the sudden decision to step away.
Davis Thompson made a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to break out of a logjam that at one point featured 10 players tied for the lead, giving him a four-under 67 on a much tougher golf course and a one-shot lead.
Thompson was among five players tied for the lead when he stood over his final putt after Brian Campbell had just holed a 30-foot birdie putt.
His final birdie put him at 15-under 198, one shot ahead of Campbell, Max Homa, Emiliano Grillo and David Lipsky, each of whom had a 68.
Behind them, Thriston Lawrence had a level-par 71 to slip 16 places on the leaderboard into a share of 32nd on eight-under. He was one clear of Garrick Higgo, who had a two-under 69 to head into the final round in a share of 39th.
