Aldrich Potgieter carded an opening two-under-par 68 on Thursday in the first round of the PGA Tour’s Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas for a share of 20th.
He made two birdies on the front nine, but his two birdies on the back nine were countered by two bogeys, and he finished five strokes off the lead together with 14 other players, including world number one Scottie Scheffler.
Up front, it was American John Pak who led at seven-under-par. He was three clear of nine players on four-under in a share of second, and there were nine more on three-under in a share of 11th.
As usual, it was Potgieter’s driving distance which got him into contention, and he married that with some great driving accuracy too, as he hit 11 out of 14 fairways.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout was a shot behind Potgieter on one-under-par in a share of 35th with 21 other players on a particularly tight leaderboard.
Erik van Rooyen and David Frost – playing on an exemption as a past winner of the tournament – both struggled. Van Rooyen was on five-over and Frost was on seven-over.
