Erik van Rooyen got his second tournament of 2024 underway on Thursday with a one-under-par 69 to be in a share of 47th after the first round of the PGA Tour’s Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Van Rooyen made an eagle, a birdie and two bogeys to be seven strokes behind the leader. Cam Davis of Australia made nine birdies and a bogey on his way to an eight-under-par 62. That put him two strokes clear of Taylor Montgomery of the United States, with four players in a share of third.

Garrick Higgo opened with a two-over-par 72, and was down in a share of 107th.

The real defence of Waialae Country Club turned up in the afternoon, with winds whipping up around one the flattest tracks on the PGA Tour. Play in the first round was suspended due to darkness, with some players through just 15 holes.
