Jayden Schaper carded a four-under-par 69 on Friday to move into a share of fifth after the second round of the DP World Tour’s European Open at the Green Eagle Golf Courses in Hamburg, Germany.
Despite two bogeys which somewhat spoiled a storming finish, Schaper moved to six-under-par for the tournament, six strokes behind the leader, Laurie Canter of England. Canter mastered the conditions after heavy morning rain delayed the start of the round best, with his bogey-free seven-under-par 66 giving him a three-stroke lead over Niklaas Norgaard of Denmark and first-round leader Jannik de Bruyn of Germany.
Garrick Porteous was in a share of fourth, and Schaper shared fifth with four other players, Tom McKibbin of Northern Ireland, Italy’s Guido Migliozzi, Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal and Yuto Katuragawa of Japan.
Schaper made two birdies without dropping a shot on the front nine, but he dropped a shot on the par-four 13th. He responded to that with three successive birdies, dropped a shot on the 17th and made another birdie on 18 to finish off.
Dylan Frittelli was two shots back from Schaper on four-under through 36 holes after he made bogey on his last hole – the ninth – to sign for a two-under-par 71. He was in a share of 15th.
Ockie Strydom had a one-over-par 74 in his second round, and he was in a share of 26th on three-under. Casey Jarvis was one further back on two-under after his second round of four-under 69, and Thriston Lawrence came roaring back with a second-round of six-under 67 (which included two bogeys) to join Jarvis in a share of 33rd.
Brandon Stone, Jacques Kruyswijk, Pieter Moolman, Robin Williams, Darren Fichardt and Louis de Jager all missed the cut. Zander Lombard withdrew ahead of the second round, and Jaco Prinsloo and Rhys Enoch retired after play was suspended due to darkness on Friday evening. Both were likely to miss the cut.
