Although he finished with a bogey on Friday, Jayden Schaper still made great progress up the leaderboard into a share of second after the second round of the DP World Tour’s Magical Kenya Open at Muthaiga Golf Club, Nairobi.
Schaper carded a six-under-par 65 to move to nine-under through 36 holes, one shot behind the leader Nacho Elvira of Spain, who also had a 65 to move to 10-under. In second with Schaper were Nick Bachem of Germany, who carded 67, and Ryo Hisatsune of Japan, who raced to an eight-under 63.
Schaper started his round on the 10th, and made four birdies on his opening nine, including three in a row from the 16th. He picked up three more after the turn on the third, fourth and sixth, but he dropped a shot on the final hole to slip back into his share of second.
Wilco Nienaber, first-round leader Dylan Mostert and Casey Jarvis were three shots further back on six-under in a share of 14th. Nienaber had a two-under 69, Mostert a one-over 72 and Jarvis a one-over 70.
Louis de Jager was in a share of 21st on five-under, and Shaun Norris, Daniel van Tonder, JC Ritchie and Bryce Easton were in a share of 26th on four-under. Good friends Justin Harding and Oliver Bekker were on three-under in a share of three-under, and Deon Germishuys was on two-under in a share of 50th.
Justin Walters, Tristen Strydom and Thomas Aiken made the cut on the number at one-under. Jacques Kruyswijk, Benjamin Follett-Smith of Zimbabwe, Brandon Stone, Hennie du Plessis and Keenan Davidse all missed the cut.
