Jayden Schaper took advantage of the modified stableford format of the PGA Tour’s Barracuda Championship at the Tahoe Mountain Club in Truckee, California on Thursday to finish round one in a share of 15th.
The format awards two points for birdies and subtracts just one for bogeys, and Schaper made seven birdies and just three bogeys in his opening four-under-par 67. That gave him 11 points, eight behind the leader, Ben Silverman of Canada, who made 10 birdies and a single bogey. Silverman led by two points from Kelly Kraft of the United States.
Schaper was one of eight players on 11 points, as was his fellow-South African MJ Daffue. Daffue had six birdies, but a double-bogey cost him three points, and he also had a bogey on his card.
Casey Jarvis made an eagle on his way to a two-under-par 69 which gave him nine points and a share of 30th. He also made four birdies and four bogeys.
Louis de Jager made four birdies and two bogeys on his way to six points for his 69 and a share of 59th. Dylan Frittelli was on two points for his two-over 73, while Garrick Higgo was on minus-four for his five-over 76 which included just one birdie.
