Schwartzel tightens grip on inaugural LIV Golf event with a 66

Charl Schwartzel tightened his grip on the inaugural LIV Golf ‘tournament’ on Friday with a second-round four-under-par 66 taking him to nine-under through 36 holes in the 48-man event at Centurion Golf Club in Hertfordshire.

He made seven birdies and three bogeys in his second round to stretch his lead over second-placed Hennie du Plessis to three shots. Du Plessis was alone in second, with Peter Uihlein of the United States in third on four-under, a further two shots back. Oliver Bekker was in fourth on three-under after a three-under 67 in the second round. Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent, Phachara Khongwatmai of Thailand, Englishman Sam Horsfield and former world number one Dustin Johnson were in a share of fifth on one-under.

Next best of the nine South Africans in the field was Louis Oosthuizen on one-over in a share of 12th after his one-under 69 in the second round. Justin Harding and Ian Snyman were in a share of 17th on two-over for the 54-hole event. JC Ritchie was in 21st on three-over after a level-par 70 and Shaun Norris was in a share of 32nd on five-over after a two-over 72.
