While there was no catching the man who has been a serial winner on the PGA Tour Champions this year, Ernie Els carded a two-under-par 68 on Sunday to finish in a share of third in the Kaulig Companies Championship at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
Els moved to seven-under-par for the 72-hole tournament, and that put him fours strokes behind the winner, Steve Stricker of the United States, who took his fifth trophy of the season at 11-under-par after he carded a closing four-under-par 66. Stricker was three clear of David Toms in second, and Els shared third with KJ Choi of Korea and American Harrison Frazar.
It was a quiet opening nine for Els as he made a birdie on the seventh to tourn in one-under. But he gave that shot back with a bogey on the 10th, before making two birdies on the 16th and 17th.
Behind him, Retief Goosen closed with a one-over-par 71 to slip to a share of 16th at one-over for the tournament.
