Thriston Lawrence finished a good week on the DP World Tour with a closing level-par 72 on Sunday to finish in a share of sixth in the Hainan Classic at Mission Hills in Hainan, China.
Jordan Gumberg of the United States held off playing partner Jorge Campillo on the final day. The American, who only kept his DP World Tour card for this season thanks to a hole-out eagle on the 72nd hole of last October’s Genesis Championship in South Korea, can add China to his list of favourite Asian destinations after a one-stroke victory at Mission Hills. A final round of 70 saw him finish 19 under par, with Campillo’s birdie putt at the last staying up as he finished 18 under.
Lawrence made a birdie and a bogey on the front nine, and was in good shape with a birdie on the 12th taking him to 15-under. But two bogeys on 16 and 18 sandwiched a birdie on 17, and he had to be happy with his 14-under total.
Dylan Frittelli slumped to a four-over 76 in the last round, with two bogeys and a double on the front nine seeing him slip to 13th place on his own at 12-under-par.
Zander Lombard was on two-under in a share of 55th after his closing one-over 73, and Jonathan Broomhead finished in a share of 63rd with his closing 73. He was on level-par for the tournament.
It was Gumberg’s second DP World Tour win, just over two years on from his SDC Championship success in South Africa in March 2024.
A closing bogey denied 17-year-old Chinese star Yanhan Zhou a fourth successive 68 but he still shared third place on 15 under with Marcus Armitage and Adrian Otaegui.
Lawrence, Euan Walker and Daniel Rodrigues shared sixth place on 14 under with Yuto Katsuragawa, Andy Sullivan, Eddie Pepperell and Martin Couvra a further shot back.
