Hennie du Plessis carded the round of the day on Saturday when he signed for an eight-under-par 64 in the third round of the DP World Tour’s flagship BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Golf Club, south-west of London.

Du Plessis made an eagle, seven birdies and a bogey in his climb into a share of 17th ahead of the final round. At nine-under-par through 54 holes, he was seven shots behind the leader, Ludvig Aberg of Sweden. Aberg had a six-under 66 to take him two shots clear of Connor Syme of Scotland and Tommy Fleetwood of England who shared second on 14-under-par.

Du Plessis started his third round on the 10th, and he reeled off five birdies in succession from the 12th to reach the turn in 32. He picked up his sixth birdie on the third after the turn, and then on the par-five fourth, he made his eagle. There was another birdie on the sixth, but a bogey on the seventh pegged his progress back.

Oliver Bekker was just one stroke further back in a share of 25th with Joost Luiten of the Netherlands and Poland’s Adrian Meronk. Bekker’s seven-under 65 included eight birdies and a bogey.

Louis de Jager signed for a level-par 72 in the third round, and, at three-under for the tournament, was in a share of 52nd.

Zander Lombard brought up the rear of the 79 players who made the cut after a third-round seven-over 79 saw him slip to four-over through 54 holes.
