England’s Thomas Spreadborough dropped just a single shot on Tuesday on his way to a share of the lead in the first round of the Sunshine Tour’s Qualifying School-Stage 1 at Benoni Country Club.
He made three birdies without dropping a shot on the front nine, and then made his single bogey on the par-three 15th. He finished with a birdie on 18, however, and his three-under-par 69 gave him a share of the lead with South African Carlo Heunis.
They were one stroke clear of five players on two-under-par, including Daniel Palmquist of Sweden. There are no fewer than 33 players from countries other than South Africa in the field of 116 players vying to make their way into the Sunshine Tour’s Qualifying School-Final Stage at Heron Banks next week.
There are also 49 amateurs in the field, with the leading one after the first round being South African Joshua Edwards on one-under-par in a share of eighth place.
