Despite a double-bogey on the 16th on Sunday, Brandon Stone finished in a share of seventh in the DP World Tour’s FedEx Open de France at Le Golf National in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France.

Stone closed with a one-under-par 70 to finish on 14-under-par for the tournament, having got it to 16-under before he hit his tee-shot on the par-three 16th into the water. Stone’s approach from the drop zone found the rough, 15 feet left to the hole, and he chipped to six feet, leaving himself a putt for double-bogey.

Before that, he had made birdie on the second hole, dropped a shot on the fourth, and got himself in a good spot to challenge for second place with birdies on six, nine and 14.

In the end, he was six strokes behind the winner, Matt Fitzpatrick of England, who didn’t have his best game with him in the final round. However, Fitzpatrick had enough in the tank for his one-under 70 to take him to 20-under-par and a three-stroke win over Angel Hidalgo of Spain.

The win capped a special few weeks for Fitzpatrick who, with his wife Katherine, recently welcomed their first child Jack. The champion said: “I was just speaking to my wife. First win as a dad is really cool and hopefully I can continue that trend. I can’t wait to get home and see them.”

Matthieu Pavon and Tom Vaillant shared the honours as top home players, with Eugenio Chacarra of Spain and Kristoffer Reitan of Denmark alongside them in third on 15-under. Pavon’s 64 matched Dan Bradbury for the low round of the final day.

Defending champion Michael Kim of the United States, Italian Guido Migliozzi and Stone finished a shot further back with Denmark’s Jeff Winther alone in 10th on 13-under.

Stone’s finish went a long way to seeing him keep his playing privileges for next season as he climbed 16 places on the Race to Dubai rankings to 88th. The top 100 players are assured of their cards.

Thriston Lawrence finished in a share of 28th after a closing two-over 73.
