Christiaan Bezuidenhout made five birdies on his opening nine on Friday on his way to a superb six-under-par 65 in the second round of the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic to climb into a share of 15th ahead of the weekend.
He started his round on the 10th and got straight to work with two consecutive birdies. He made his third on the 14th, and then made two in a row again ahead of the turn on eight and nine. There were two in a row again on three and four after the turn, but he dropped his only shot of the day on the eighth.
He moved to eight-under-par for the tournament, seven shots off the lead which was held by first-round leader JT Poston. Poston added a 65 to his opening 62 to lead by four from Denny McCarthy who was on 11-under in second.
“I didn’t feel like I hit it as well as I hit it yesterday,” said Bezuidenhout. “The difference in scoring was the putter today. I rolled in a couple of 20-footers today which is always nice.
“The ball striking has definitely improved over the last week, so hopefully I can keep it going over the weekend. I hope the putter can stay warm as well.”
Dylan Frittelli added a second-round one-under-par 70 to his opening 66, and moved to a share of 24th on six-under for the tournament.
Dawie van der Walt missed the cut after a second-round 70 took him to two-over for 36 holes.
