Kaleigh Telfer overcame a double-bogey six on her front nine on Thursday to card an opening two-under-par 69 in the first round of the Epson Tour’s Atlantic Beach Classic at Atlantic Beach Country Club in Atlantic Beach, Florida.
Telfer is the only South African in the field, and she started her round on the 10th. She picked up a birdie on the 12th, but then made her double on the 16th. She quickly regained those strokes with birdies on 17 and 18 to turn one-under, but she dropped another shot on the fourth to go back to level-par. She picked up two more birdies after that mistake too, on the fifth and seventh, and she finished the first round in a share of 28th.
The leaders, Lauren Stephenson and Sarah White of the United States, each carded eight-under 63, and each made an eagle in their round.
There were plenty of red numbers during round one, with 53 players breaking par. Low scores were in demand during the first round because of the predicted forecast for round two, which is showing high winds and rain throughout the day.
