An eagle in a bogey-free round of six-under-par 66 on Thursday gave Kaleigh Telfer a precious share of fourth place after the first round of the Epson Tour Championship on the Celebrity Course at Indian Wells Golf Resort in California.
Telfer, who has had a pretty ordinary year on the feeder tour to the LPGA Tour, holed her approach shot on the par-four 12th. She also made birdies on the sixth and ninth on the front nine, and on the 10th and 17th on the back nine.
She ended the first round two strokes off the lead, which was held at eight-under-par by American Sophia Schubert. She led by one from countrywoman Alice Hodge and Spain’s Carla Tejeda Mulet. Telfer shared fourth with five other players.
Beginning in 2024, 15 LPGA cards were distributed to the top points earners from the season. Each regular season event offers the winner 500 points, and the Epson Tour Championship offers 650 points as the season finale.
A win in this tournament for Telfer could get her inside that top 15.
