Hennie du Plessis closed with a three-under-par 69 on Sunday to climb inside the top 10 in the DP World Tour’s flagship tournament, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England.
Du Plessis bogeyed the 16th after making an eagle and two birdies on the back nine to move to 12-under-par for the tournament. That put him in a share of 10th, six shots off the winning total of 18-under-par by New Zealand’s Ryan Fox. Fox overcame a triple-bogey on the third hole of the final round to sign for a five-under 67 to beat Aaron Rai and Tyrrell Hatton of England by one shot. Jon Rahm of Spain was third on 16-under-par.
Du Plessis made his eagle on the par-five 12th when he hit his approach to inside 12 feet from 165 yards. His showing sees him climb 17 places on the Race to Dubai to 73rd, a step closer to retaining his card for 2024 and closer to the top 50 which will get him into the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
Louis de Jager closed with a two-under-par 70 to finish in a share of 36th and get inside the top 100 on the Race to Dubai. Oliver Bekker slipped to a six-over-par 78 and finished in a share of 57th. Zander Lombard had a closing two-under 70 and was in a share of 69th.
