Christiaan Bezuidenhout started his 2022 campaign on the PGA Tour with a top 20 finish on Sunday as he closed with a three-under-par 67 in the Sony Open in Hawaii to finish 14-under-par, seven shots out of the play-off.

Reigning Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama won that play-off after chasing down long-time leader Russell Henley of the United States with a closing seven-under-par 63. Matsuyama eagled the par-five 18th to win the play-off. Kevin Kisner of the US and Seamus Power of Ireland shared third on 19-under.

Bezuidenhout made five birdies and two bogeys for his 67, and finished with a flourish as he birdied 17 and 18 for his share of 17th. He was under par all week, with his worst round being his second when he carded a one-under 69.

Erik van Rooyen finished strongly too, his closing six-under-par 64 one of the rounds of the day as he finished in a share of 20th, one shot behind Bezuidenhout. He started with a bogey, but that was the only blemish on his card and he made three birdies on the front nine, two more on the homeward nine, and then closed out the week with an eagle on the 18th.

Both Bezuidenhout and Van Rooyen moved inside the top 100 on the FedEx Cup rankings with their performances.
