It was a tough start for Retief Goosen in the US Senior Open on Thursday as he carded a two-over-par 72 at Omaha Country Club in Omaha, Nebraska.

That put the two-time US Open winner in a share of 44th, seven strokes off the lead which was shared by Stephen Ames of Canada and American Billy Andrade. They held a one-stroke edge over Wes Short Jr, and were two ahead of Robert Karlsson of Sweden and the in-form Alex Cejka of Germany.

Goosen made three bogeys and a birdie in his round, after starting very solidly from the 10th with seven consecutive pars. He dropped his first shot on the 17th, and then another after the turn on the third. He made his birdie on the sixth, but dropped on his last of the day on the ninth.

Ernie Els was one shot further back on three-over in a share of 59th. He had a much more eventful round, with four birdies, five bogeys and a double on his card.
