It was a quiet start for the South Africans in the field on Thursday in the first round of the PGA Tour’s Wells Fargo Championship, and Dawie van der Walt was the best of them with his one-under-par 69 putting him in a share of 60th.
In fact, Slovakia’s Rory Sabbatini – via Royal Durban – carded an opening three-under-par 67 to be in a share of 17th with 20 other players, including Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia. The lead was held by Jason Day of Australia on seven-under, one stroke ahead of Joel Dahmen of the United States. There were five players in a share of third on five-under.
Charl Schwartzel was on level-par, Dylan Frittelli on one-over and Branden Grace on four-over.
