Erik van Rooyen climbed 41 places on the leaderboard on Friday with a second-round five-under-par 67 in the PGA Tour’s Fortinet Championship at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California.
Van Rooyen dropped just a single shot while making six birdies as he moved to six-under-par for the tournament at the halfway mark and a share of 19th. He was six shots off the lead which was shared by American Sahith Theegala and Korean SH Kim. They led by one from another Korean, Sangmoon Bae, with ermicans Eric Cole and Kelly Kraft in fourth and fifth. Ryder Cup stars Justin Thomas and Max Homa were in a share of sixth on eight-under.
The other South Africans in the field won’t be in action over the weekend: Christiaan Bezuidenhout withdrew with a wrist injury, while Garrick Higgo, MJ Daffue and Dylan Frittelli missed the cut.
