Erik van Rooyen felt he might have left a few out there on Sunday, but he still managed to finish in second place in the PGA Tour’s Barracuda Championship at the Old Greenwood course at Tahoe Mountain Club in Truckee, California.

Van Rooyen, who won the title in 2021 in the modified stableford format of the tournament, carded a closing four-under-par 67 with an eagle, four birdies and two bogeys. That gave him 11 points in a system which gives five points for an eagle, two for a birdie and subtracts one for a bogey.

In the end, he finished on 44 points, three behind the winner Ryan Gerard of the United States, and six behind his record-setting total from 2021. He was five clear of third-placed Todd Clements of England.

“Mixed emotions,” Van Rooyen said. “Really happy with how I fought. Left some shots out there the last few days unfortunately with the putter, but can’t expect to make everything, right? So maybe I’m a bit too hard on myself.”

Jacques Kruyswijk had a slow start to his final round, with pars until the sixth where he made his only bogey of the day. He made up for that with a hole-out eagle on the par-four ninth, and then made three birdies on the back nine. His four-under-67 was worth 10 points and that gave him a share of fourth.

Robin Williams finished with a three-under 68 for 10 points, and he climbed into a share of 17th on 31 points, while Dylan Frittelli was in a share of 29th on 28 points.

The Barracuda Championship is played as an Additional Event opposite the Open Championship, and the tournament was co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour. With the victory, Gerard received a spot in the PGA Championship next year but not the Masters.
