Erik van Rooyen played himself into the weekend on Friday with a brilliant second round of six-under-par 64 in the PGA Tour’s Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

It was a bogey-free effort from Van Rooyen, who had battled to a five-over 75 in the first round. He looked likely to miss the cut before he turned it on in the second round with three birdies on each of the nines after he started on the 10th.

He was a long way off the lead, which was held at 11-under-par by Ben Griffin of the United States and Matti Schmid of Germany after each had rounds of seven-under-par 63. That duo was two clear of first-round leader John Pak of America, who had a two-under 68 in the second round.

Aldrich Potgieter also had a 68 in the second round for his second-successive two-under round. At four-under, he was the leading South African in the field in a share of 11th, seven strokes off the pace.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout was in a share of 36th after a second round of one-under 69 took him to two-under through 36 holes, and David Frost, playing as a past winner of the tournament, missed the cut after his second round of 76.
