Van Rooyen needs strong FedEx St Jude Championship finish to extend Playoffs run

Erik van Rooyen has one more round to try and play his way into the next tournament in the PGA Tour’s FedExCup Playoffs after his third tour of one-over-par 71 on Saturday saw him slip to a share of 20th in the FedEx St Jude Championship.

Van Rooyen had two bogeys on each of the nines at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, and just three birdies in his third round as his projected position on the FedExCup rankings after 54 holes in this week’s tournament saw him set to rise just one spot to 57th.

That would not be enough to get him into the BMW Championship, for which only the top 50 qualify, and it’s certainly not enough to see him get into the Tour Championship for the top 30 players. It will take a good final round – possibly even a top 10 place – to get him into the next stage.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout, on the other hand, is safely into the BMW Championship, even ahead of the final round in Memphis. He carded a third-round level-par 70 to move to a share of 25th on four-under for the tournament. His FedExCup ranking is projected to go down three spots to 25th.

Up front, Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama made what will probably be the decisive move for the tournament as he signed for a six-under 64 to move to 17-under through 54 holes. That’s five strokes clear of Nick Dunlap, while Viktor Hovland was in third on 11-under.
