Erik van Rooyen opened his final prep for the PGA Championship with a four-under-par 67 on Thursday in the first round of the PGA Tour’s Myrtle Beach Classic in South Carolina for a share of 13th.

Van Rooyen, who did not make the field for the PGA Tour Signature Event, the Wells Fargo Championship, made five birdies and a bogey, and that left him three shots off the lead. Up front, Beau Hossler of the United States and Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre each carded a seven-under-par 64 to lead by one from four players.

Thriston Lawrence was down in a share of 51st on one-under-par 70, but he looked as if he was starting to adapt to play on the PGA Tour. His approach play started resembling the kind of level we have come to expect of him, and he made some putts as he made an eagle, three birdies and four bogeys to be six off the lead.

Garrick Higgo battled his way to a share of 119th on three-over-par.
