Erik van Rooyen did well in the cold, tough conditions on Thursday to open the PGA Tour’s Signature Event, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with a five-under-par 67 on Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California.

Van Rooyen started like a house on fire, with four consecutive birdies on the first four holes, and he made a fifth as he reached the turn on the ninth. He dropped a shot on the 12th, and regained it immediately with his final birdie of the day on the 13th.

The tournament is a no-cut affair with 80 players in the field, and each player plays a round on Pebble Beach and on Spyglass Hill ahead of the weekend on Pebble Beach.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout opened with a four-under 68 on Pebble Beach Links.

In the lead, Russell Henly of the United States opened with an eight-under 64 on Spyglass Hill.
