Erik van Rooyen surged into a share of 15th place after a second successive five-under-par 66 in the second round of the PGA Tour’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship on Friday.
Van Rooyen, who made an eagle and three birdies in a bogey-free round, moved to 10-under-par for the tournament when play was halted due to darkness with just one three-ball still to complete the second round. Van Rooyen was four shots off the lead which was held by Ben Crane of the United States after his brilliant nine-under 62. Crane was one stroke clear of five players on 13-under in a share of second.
Van Rooyen’s eagle came on the 517-yard par-five seventh towards the end of his round after he started the day on the 10th. He drove it long all day, averaging 357 yards off the tee, and hit all but on of the 18 greens in regulation to set up his good performance.
MJ Daffue, who opened with a 65 in the first round, followed up with a one-under 70 in the second round to be in a share of 41st. Garrick Higgo made the cut on the number at six-under after a second successive three-under-par 68. He was in a share of 55th.
