Erik van Rooyen climbed 26 places on the leaderboard on Friday into a share of 18th with a five-under-par 66 in the incomplete second round of the PGA Tour’s Black Desert Championship in Iviuns, Utah.
After he made three bogeys in his opening round, Van Rooyen was much more consistent in the second round, dropping just one shot on the 15th whole making six birdies.
He moved to eight-under-par for the tournament with second-round play for those who didn’t complete their rounds due to restart at 10.15am local time on Saturday. He was six strokes off the lead which was held by Germany’s Stefan Jaeger. Jaeger had a second round of eight-under 63 on another day of low scoring. He was one clear of Canada’s Adam Svensson, who had a two-under 69 to move to 13-under, and America’s Ben Kohles, who had a 64.
Van Rooyen was straight off the tee in his second round, hitting 13 of 14 fairways, and he was superb on the greens, making 1.5 putts per greens in regulation. He hit 12 of 18 greens in regulation, and scrambled well when he missed.
Garrick Higgo paid the price for his opening seven-over-par 78, and his fine six-under 65 in the second round was not enough to help him make the cut.
