Erik van Rooyen’s bogey-free third round of seven-under-par 65 on Saturday kept him in touch – just – with the lead of the PGA Tour’s Myrtle Beach Classic at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club in South Carolina.

Van Rooyen was in a share of second on 14-under-par through 54 holes with Jorge Campillo of Spain and Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre. They were all four shots behind the leader, Chris Gotterup of the United States, who also shot a seven-under 65 in the third round to reach 18-under-par.

Van Rooyen made five birdies on his front nine as he began his charge up the leaderboard, and he managed another two on the homeward nine, even while he missed out on making birdie on the two par-fives on the back nine.

Thriston Lawrence dropped eight places on the leaderboard to a share of 38th with his third round of two-under-par 70.
