Erik van Rooyen played himself into contention with a four-under-par 67 on Friday in the second round of the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
His six birdies and two bogeys took him to six-under-par through 36 holes, and that put him three shots behind the leader Patrick Cantlay. Cantlay also carded a 67, and that gave him a two-stroke lead over second-placed Robert Streb. Van Rooyen shared third with Cameron Tringale, Aaron Wise, Cameron Youn and Joel Dahmen.
Van Rooyen went bogey-free on the front nine, with four birdies coming on the second, fifth, seventh and ninth as he turned in four-under. His back nine was tougher, with bogeys on 14 and 18 counterbalanced by birdies on 13 and 15 counterbalancing the dropped shots.
Behind him, Charl Schwartzel had a one-over 72 to drop to two-under for the tournament and a share of 34th. Dylan Frittelli hade a level-par 71 to stay one-under in 43rd together with Branden Grace, who was one-under in his second round.
Garrick Higgo missed the cut as he added a six-over 77 to his opening three-over 74.
