Erik van Rooyen kept himself in touch on Friday with a second round of two-under-par 69 at Le Golf National in Paris, which took him to a share of 10th ahead of the weekend action in the Olympic Games.

Van Rooyen made five birdies and three bogeys and was in a share of 10th on six-under-par. He was just five shots off the lead which was held by the 2021 gold medallist Xander Schauffele of the United States, Hideki Matsuyama of Japan and Tommy Fleetwood of Great Britain. At 11-under, they led by two from Spain’s Jon Rahm, with CT Pan of Taiwan, Tom Kim of Korea and Belgium’s Thmas Detry in a share of fifth at eight-under.

One of Van Rooyen’s birdies came on the 18th, which served as at least partial redemption for the double-bogey he made there in the first round. He shared 10th with Joaquin Niemann of Chile and world number one Scottie Scheffler of the United States.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout had a second round of level-par 71 to remain at one-under for the tournament and he was in a share of 35th.
