Darren Fichardt got himself right in the mix on Friday with a second round of two-under-par 70 in the DP World Tour’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth lifting him into a share of 11th.

The South African veteran – he’s already in a strong position in his first season on the Legends Tour – made four birdies and two bogeys to move to just five strokes off the lead at the halfway mark of the tournament which features probably the strongest field on the DP World Tour outside the majors.

Up front on 12-under-par, Hideki Matsuyama of Japan rode a pair of eagles to a second round of eight-under 64. He also made five birdies and a bogey to have a one-stroke edge over Ludvig Aberg of Sweden, England’s Justin Rose and Norway’s Viktor Hovland.

Fichardt was one shot clear of, amongst others, Dylan Naidoo in a share of 16th place on six-under-par. The South African Open champion signed for a second round of three-under-par 69.

Casey Jarvis, who was the leading South African after his first round of seven-under 65, battled his way to a two-over 74 in the second round, with a double-bogey, five bogeys, three birdies and an eagle.
