Veteran Brandon Pieters got himself into a share of the lead on Thursday after he carded a two-under-par 70 in the third round of the Sunshine Tour’s Qualifying School-First Stage at Benoni Country Club.

Pieters, who won four times on the Sunshine Tour in 2009 and 2010, made five birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey to move to two-under through 54 holes. He shared the lead with Thomas Strandemo of the United States, who signed for a one-under 71.

They were one shot clear of the 36-hole leader, Carlo Heunis, who slumped to a four-over 76 in his third round. Heunis shared third with a pair of amateurs, Pedro Cristovam of South Africa and Ireland’s Robert Brazill.

Pieters also has the scalp of Thriston Lawrence on his belt, having taken the former South African Open champion down 1-up in the now-defunct IGT Tour’s Zwartkop Match Play in 2017.
