Justin Walters came up short of victory on Sunday, but his share of eighth in the DP World Tour’s Made in HimmerLand tournament in Denmark took him inside the top 50 of that tour’s rankings as he played in his first tournament in five weeks.

Three bogeys down the stretch – on 12, 15 and 17 – brought him up short in his bid for what would have been a maiden title in Europe, but it was his second top 10 of the season, after his share of third in the Betfred British Masters back in May.

Walters got it to 19-under through the 11th hole, and was challenging for the lead before it unravelled somewhat for him down the stretch. In the end, 16-under after a closing one-under 70 put him five strokes behind the winner, Oliver Wilson of England, who birdied 16 and 17 to pull one clear of Scot Ewen Ferguson. Wilson carded a closing four-under-par 67, while Ferguson had a 66.

Ross McGowan, who won on the Sunshine Tour in Zambia in 2015 and led through the first three rounds, carded a closing level-par 71 to share fourth on 17-under with English countrymen Matthew Jordan and Matthew Southgate, and another former Sunshine Tour player, Francesco Laporta of Italy.

Walters shared eighth with the leading Dane Marcus Helligkilde, Germany’s Nicolai von Dellingshausen and the man who shot the lowest round of the day with his nine-under 62, Daan Huizing of the Netherlands.

Behind Walters, Zander Lombard finished with a flourish with a five-under 66 lifting him inside the top 20 at 18th on 12-under. George Coetzee was a further shot back on 11-under after a three-under 68, while Darren Fichardt closed with a level-par 71 to be in a share of 35th on nine-under. Thomas Aiken had a closing one-under 70 to be six-under for the week in a share of 52nd, while Justin Harding finished poorly with a three-over 74 to share 66th on two-under.
