Justin Walters fought off the effects of a double-bogey and two bogeys on Friday to stay in contention in the DP World Tour’s Made in HimmerLand in Denmark with a two-under-par 69.

Walters also made six birdies in his second round, after starting strongly on the front nine as he gained shots on the fifth, sixth and eighth. He dropped his first shot on the ninth, and then birdied the 10th immediately after the turn. He picked up another shot on the 14th, before making double on the par-four 15th. He made birdie two on the 16th, but dropped again on the 18th.

All that left him on 10-under for the tournament in a share of 12th, five shots behind leader Ross McGowan of England. McGowan, a winner on the Sunshine Tour in 2015, had nine birdies and three bogeys in his second-round 65, and, at 15-under, he led by one from countryman Richard Mansell and another former Sunshine Tour regular, Francesco Laporta of Italy.

Next best of the South Africans were George Coetzee and Darren Fichardt, who both had good second rounds to climb into a share of 29th on seven-under-par. Coetzee had an eagle, five birdies and a bogey on his way to a six-under 65, and Fichardt made eight birdies and a bogey as he signed for a seven-under-par 64.

Zander Lombard had a one-over 72 in the second round, and slipped into a share of 49th on five-under. Justin Harding and Thomas Aiken were on four-under after rounds of level-par 71 and three-under 68 respectively. They both made the cut on the number.

Last week’s winner on the DP World Tour, Thriston Lawrence, missed out on the weekend action with two double-bogeys hampering his efforts to make the cut as he carded a level-par 71 to miss out by two. Wilco Nienaber, Richard Sterne, Brandon Stone, Tristen Strydom, Haydn Porteous and Daniel van Tonder also missed cut. Oliver Bekker withdrew after the first round.
