Robin Williams kept himself inside the top 20 on Saturday with a third round of one-under-par 71 on the tough Carnoustie course ahead of the final round of the DP World Tour’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in St Andrews, Scotland.
After successive rounds of six-under 66 on Kingsbarns and the Old Course in benign weather conditions, Williams did well to cope with the sterner challenge posted by Carnoustie to move to 13-under-par with three birdies and two bogeys in his third round.
He was in a share of 15th together with Branden Grace, who carded a four-under-par 68 at Kingsbarns. The leading South African after the third round was Darren Fichardt after his two-under-par 70 at Carnoustie moved him to 15-under-par and a share of seventh.
At the top of the leaderboard, history beckons for England’s Tyrrell Hatton as he seeks to become the first golfer to win the title three times after equalling the course record on the Old Course with a 61 to lead by one shot. Hatton took advantage of a beautiful day on one of golf’s most venerated courses and signed for a magnificent round of 11-under-par to lead the field on 22-under overall.
He leads by one from Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts, who fired his third successive seven-under-par 65, which included a double-bogey six on the 18th at Kingsbarns.
