David Meyers was the only one of two South Africans in the field to earn his Asian Tour playing privileges on Saturday when he finished on eight-under-par after the five-round Final Stage Asian Tour Qualifying School.
His closing round of 68 saw him finish in a share of 26th, and, with 35 players earning the right to play on the tour for the 2024 season, the former Oklahoma City University player has got a professional home for the year.
The other South African, Otto van Buynder, closed with a 72 to finish the five rounds on two-under-par in a share of 60th.
Meyers tried his hand at professional golf after three years at OCU when he tried and failed in 2019 to get on to the Sunshine Tour via qualifying school. He was able to return, and an extra year of eligibility after COVID-19 wiped out the spring season of 2020 gave him the chance to cvarve out a successful conclusion to his collegiate career.
The Final Stage Asian Tour Qualifying School was won by Swede Kristoffer Broberg, who closed with a pair of 66s to take him to 18-under. That was two strokes clear of Shogenji Tatsunori of Japan.
Broberg, three off top spot at the start of the day, eagled the par-five 18th at Springfield Royal Country Club, in Hua Hin, Thailand. He also eagled the second and the 12th.
Tatsunori closed with a 67, two ahead of Justin Warren (68) from Australia, Spain’s Carlos Pigem (72) and Justin Quiban (73) from the Philippines.
