Jaco Ahlers raced home in five-under-par 67 on Sunday to finish in a share of sixth in the Asian Tour’s Moutai Singapore Open at the Singapore Island Country Club.
After starting the final round with seven successive pars, Ahlers picked up his first birdie on the eighth hole. He made it three birdies in a row around the turn with gains on nine and 10, and he made two more birdies on 14 and 18.
His tournament total of 15-under-par put him four shots out of the play-off between Japan’s Yosuke Asaji and Korean Jeunghun Wang, who finished on 19-under-par after regulation play.
Asaji became the first player from Japan to win the Moutai Singapore Open in nearly 50 years after he beat Wang on the first hole of a sudden-death play-off. Asaji made a birdie putt from six feet in the play-off, on the par-five 18th, after Wang found water with his second and ended with a six.
Thailand’s Rattanon Wannasrichan (66) and Korean Soomin Lee (69) tied for third, one shot back, in the penultimate event of the season on The International Series – the set of upper-tier events on the Asian Tour that offer a pathway to the LIV Golf League.
Ian Snyman, who was the leading South African after the second and third rounds, was able to eke out a level-par 72 in the closing round, and he slipped down the leaderboard into a share of 11th on 13-under-par.
Zimbabwe’s Kieran Vincent was a shot further back on 12-under in a share of 18th after his closing one-under 71.
