In a tough closing round on Sunday, Casandra Alexander carded a two-over-par 74 to finish in a share of sixth in the Ladies European Tour’s Australian Women’s Classic at Magenta Shores Golf & Country Club.
Australian Kelsey Bennett earned the “biggest and best” win of her career with a four-shot victory on home soil to land a maiden LET title. Leading by one heading into the final day at Magenta Shores Golf & Country, the 26-year-old battled through brutally tough conditions carding a round of one-under 71 to claim the win on 13-under-par.
Bennett was one of only three players to go under-par on Sunday as the wind and rain reared its ugly head on the Central Coast in Australia. And Alexander had a closing triple-bogey seven on the final hole to stop her from finishing under par for her round.
Alexander had opened with a birdie on the first, but made bogeys on seven and eight. She was back to level-par with a birdie on 12, and one-over with a bogey on 14. Then she got it under par with successive birdies on 16 and 17 before the horrible finish left her on five-under for the tournament.
With the victory, Bennett moves to the top of the LET Order of Merit and books her spot at the AIG Women’s Open. Alexander is in fifth place on the Order of Merit, and Caitlyn Macnab, who closed with an 80 for a share of 47th, is also in 47th on the list.
