Christiaan Burke dropped just a single shot on Wednesday on his way to an eight-under-par 64 in the first round of the Bushveld Tour’s Race to Q-School Wanna Be a Champion Series #3 at State Mines Golf Club.
Burke led a day of low scoring, with Robin Williams just a single stroke behind him in second place after the first round of the 54-hole tournament. James Mack, Connor Stoyell and James Erskine-Low were in a share of third on five-under-par 67.
Burke started with a birdie on the first hole, and closed out the front nine quietly enough, with just two more birdies on the third and the sixth. He picked up one more on the 10th, and then he dropped his only shot on the 11th. It was as if that galvanised him into action, and he made five birdies in the remaining seven holes.
Williams was bogey-free for his 65, with an eagle and five birdies.
The Race To Q-School Series is made up of three separate series of events. This is the third series. Each series is made up of three tournaments and will have its own Order of Merit. The top four finishers from each series will receive paid entry fees into Sunshine Tour Qualifying-School in April. Any Q-school exempt players finishing in the top four of each series will win the cash equivalent of a Q-school entry fee, that is R8,000.
