George Coetzee finished runner-up in the Vodacom Origins of Golf event at Devonvale on the Sunshine Tour last week, and it helped him climb up 94 places on the latest lists issued by the Official World Golf Rankings.
Coetzee, a five-time winner on the DP World Tour, jumped from 677th to 583rd after he lost in a play-off to Jacques Kruyswijk. That’s close to his best position on the official lists all year – he was in 582nd after finishing in a share of 32nd in the HotelPlanner Tour’s Abu Dhabi Challenge on April 20 – but it’s nowhere near his career-high of 41st which he reached when he came third in the 2013 Joburg Open.
Coetzee is trying to play his way back to the top level of the game after an extended period off as he recovered from injuries, and with status on the DP World Tour expired, he has to try his hand at playing his way back through his home tour in South Africa now. He started the year ranked 1,625th.
Zander Lombard, who is playing on the DP World Tour, also took advantage of some time at home, and his third-place finish at Devonvale saw him up 17 places from 593rd to 576th.
A lot of local players inside South Africa’s top 25 according to the official rankings had upward adjustments as there were minor shakeouts as most of the world was captivated by the Ryder Cup and not playing in points-bearing tournaments. Players who rose in the rankings are listed in bold below.
Thriston Lawrence was one of those. He was up one to 68th, and is just two places behind South Africa’s top-ranked player, Aldrich Potgieter, who is ranked 66th – unchanged from last week.
Kruyswijk climbed 22 places to 158th with his win at Devonvale, reaching his career-best ranking on the official list.
