There was no catching the eventual winner on Sunday for Retief Goosen, but his third successive level-par 71 in the final round of the US Senior Open Championship ensured he finished in a share of sixth at SentryWorld in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
It was a pretty much unstoppable march to a record 46th PGA Tour Champions victory and his 12th senior major championship for the seemingly ageless 65-year-old Bernhard Langer of Germany, who carded a one-under 70 to move to seven-under to hold off Wisconsin locals Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly by two and three strokes.
Americans Brett Quigley and Rob Labritz shared fourth on two-under, and then came Goosen and New Zealand’s Steven Alker and Dicky Pride of the United States.
Goosen had a battling front nine with two birdies and four bogeys, and he started his homeward nine with a bogey on the 10th. But he got things together with three birdies, on the 13th, 16th and the 18th.
Ernie Els closed with a one-over 72 to finish in a share of 12th, while James Kingston had a closing four-over 75 and finished in a share of 35th. Adilson Da Silva finished with a second successive 77, and was in a share of 51st.
