Amateur Ryan van Velzen keeps showing he’s got what it takes to mix it with the pros, and he took the Bushveld Tour’s tournament at Glenvista Country Club on Friday as his seven-under-par 65 gave him a one-stroke victory.

He made seven birdies and two eagles as he took on the course, and he finished up one ahead of last week’s winner on the tour, Hayden Griffiths. and Luca Filippi. Byron Coetzee, Carlo Heunis shared fourth on three-under, and Dayne Moore, amateur Derek Scullard and Jack Duthie were on two-under.

Van Velzen was six-under through nine and that alone was enough to guve him the edge coming home. “I just hit it so well off the tee,” he said. “I played really well on the front nine. I htree-putted the last, but I was just happy to shoot 30 on that nine.

It was Van Velzen’s first view of the course, and he went about his business with a vengeance as he got it to 10-under through 16 holes. “Standing on 16, I needed three birdies to shoot 59,” he said. “I decided to have a go at it. I parred number 16, and then I just finished badly, but I’m so happy with today’s performance.”

With two wins on the Big Easy IGT Challenge Tour to his name, and now this title, Van Velzen is creating huge expectations for when he finally turns professional.
