In a display of skill and determination on Thursday, Gabi Venter, the 19-year-old from Bloemfontein, secured her first Standard Bank Pro-Am Series title at Humewood Golf Course.
Having turned professional earlier this year, Venter’s victory showcased her potential and tenacity as she battled against the unforgiving elements, including strong south-easterly winds, torrential rain, and bone-chilling temperatures during the two days of the tournament.
“I am delighted even though I did leave a few putts out there,” said Venter. Round one was tough, it rained consistently, and it only stopped for about two holes, but day two was better.”
She opened with a seven-over-par in the first round to be seven shots off the pace, and she carded a two-under in the second round to beat Tara Griebenow by three strokes. Isabella van Rooyen was third with Larissa du Preez and Tandi McCallum on nine-over.
Venter acknowledged that the series was playing an important role in her professional development. “I am loving it,” she said. “It’s a good place to find your feet. It’s good to have not just six events on the Sunshine Ladies Tour at the beginning of the year, but every month we can play another Standard Bank Pro-am Series event.” Asked how much of a step up it is for her from being an amateur, Venter replied, “This is a big dream come true, more playing time and getting more experience.”
