MJ Daffue moved closer to ensuring a card on next year’s DP World Tour when he closed with a six-under-par 65 on Sunday in the Open de Portugal at PGA Aroeira 1 in Lisbon.

The South African remains the leading player from this country on the Road to Mallorca list, as he climbed one spot to second, withing reach now of the leader, Cristoffer Blomstrand of Sweden.

Daffue’s closing 65 started fast as he made four birdies in the first five holes. He dropped shots on the sixth and the ninth, but birdies on the seventh, 10th, 13th and 15th saw him finish the tournament on 22-under-par in a share of fourth.

Sebastian Friedrichsen fired a stunning final round nine-under-par 62 to win and secure his maiden HotelPlanner Tour title by three strokes. The 23-year-old made six back-nine birdies, including four consecutively, to reach an incredible 28-under-par total and charge away from overnight leader and eventual runner-up Marc Warren.

Julien Sale tied the low round of the week with a final-round 61 to take solo third at 24-under-par, with Matthew Southgate and Daffue rounding out the top five a shot further back.

MJ Viljoen closed with a four-under 67 to finish in a share of 13th, and he slipped to 17th on the Road to Mallorca rankings – just outside the top 15 who are guaranteed places on the DP World Tour next season.

Louis Albertse finished in a share of 20th on 15-under after his closing five-under 66, and he is down two places to 14th on the rankings.

The Road to Mallorca now takes a week off before heading to the United Arab Emirates for the Abu Dhabi Challenge, taking place from September 30 to October 3.
